Exceptional Circumstances aid reviewed (News)

The Rudd Government recognises that the drought continues to place extraordinary pressure on many farming families across Australia.

The Rudd Government has accepted independent advice on whether to further extend Exceptional Circumstances assistance in 34 areas of NSW, South Australia and Victoria.

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Tony Burke said the independent National Rural Advisory Council (NRAC) had reviewed the areas, which are due to expire on 31 March 2010.

Under the current system NRAC considers whether seasonal conditions have allowed the majority of producers to return to typical farm management practices.

It’s a big thing to say you’ll have nothing to do with a particular protest, particularly when it’s against actions taken under a previous government.  But that’s exactly what I did with a protest involving farmers in Canberra yesterday.

The protest was organised by some farming groups against land clearing laws.  These laws were passed at a state level more than a decade ago.  Many of the farmers blame an agreement between the states and the Howard Government for the restrictions which were placed on them.

The Rudd Government continues its support of Australia’s primary producers as they adapt to a changing climate, announcing $3 million in funding under the second round of the FarmReady Industry Grants.

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Tony Burke said the funding would help producers across Australia increase their self-reliance and preparedness for climate variability.

Primary producers, natural resource management groups and Indigenous land managers can apply for grants of up to $80,000 a year under the program.

Australia’s most damaging vertebrate pests, including camels, foxes and wild dogs, will be targeted by 12 new Rudd Government projects around the country.

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Tony Burke announced the projects will receive more than $629,700 through the Australian Pest Animal Management Program (APAMP), administered by the Bureau of Rural Sciences (BRS).

Mr Burke said pests such as rabbits, foxes and feral pigs have a major impact on agricultural production each year.

Minister for Trade Simon Crean and Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Tony Burke are pleased to announce that the European Union has granted Australia market access to its new EU Tariff Quota for high quality beef.

The duty-free quota, which first became available in August last year, provides for an additional global supply of 20,000 tonnes of high quality beef into the EU each year.
