Strengthening the Australian Economy

The Rudd Government’s fiscal stimulus has been vital to Australia’s standing as one of only three advanced economies to avoid technical recession.

Avoiding recession in Australia has had its costs, but these pale in comparison to the long term costs of recession, including higher unemployment.

It is argued by some that future generations are being saddled with unsustainable debt as a result of the stimulus. I would say two things to those people.

The Minister for Education, Julia Gillard, today vowed to stand up for tradies and their jobs against the attacks by Shadow Education Spokesperson Christopher Pyne.

The Federal Government will provide $10 million for 2000 structural adjustment places in the Productivity Places Program for insulation workers affected by changes to the Home Insulation Program.

Minister for Employment Participation Mark Arbib today announced the Federal Government will provide $10 million for 2000 structural adjustment places in the Productivity Places Program for insulation workers affected by changes to the Home Insulation Program.

These are training places available to re-train insulation workers for new jobs and are on top of the 4000 places announced last year to help workers transition from the insulation industry –
2000 places in the Language Literacy and Numeracy Program and 2000 Apprenticeship Access places.

Apprentice commencements have taken off in February, with 4317 eligible Kickstart apprentices being signed up in the last two weeks alone.

Minister for Employment Participation Mark Arbib today welcomed the release of a discussion paper by the Industry Reference Group on Employment Services Purchasing.

Senator Arbib said the Government had established the reference group last year to provide advice on stakeholder views and arrangements for purchasing employment services to help job seekers find work, and to help employers find workers.

An analysis of the permanent skilled migration program shows that changes made by the Rudd Government in 2009 helped deliver more than 1100 extra nurses, 550 new doctors and 2000 more engineers to fill skills shortages across the nation last year.

The changes also saw reduced visa grants to cooks, hairdressers and accountants in 2009 when compared to the previous year.

Parliamentary Secretary for Employment Jason Clare and Member for Hunter Joel Fitzgibbon today urged local employers to take advantage of the Rudd Government tripling the first year apprentice bonus to almost $5,000 this summer.

Senator Arbib said more than 1,932 young trades apprentices had been employed in NSW in the first six weeks of the Apprentice Kickstart program.
