The Rudd Government’s fiscal stimulus has been vital to Australia’s standing as one of only three advanced economies to avoid technical recession.

Avoiding recession in Australia has had its costs, but these pale in comparison to the long term costs of recession, including higher unemployment.

It is argued by some that future generations are being saddled with unsustainable debt as a result of the stimulus. I would say two things to those people.

Kevin Rudd, Mike Rann and I announced a joint $18 million investment to fix the dangerous intersection at Victor Harbour Road and Main Road in McLaren Vale on Saturday. This is great news to local residents and businesses, and is another example of the Federal Government’s commitment to invest in infrastructure and prepare Australia for the future.

Federal Cabinet including the Prime Minister visited Ballarat on Thursday February 18 for what will be remembered as another milestone in our region’s democracy.

Prior to the Community Cabinet many of my parliamentary colleagues told me how great these events were for their local communities – and they were not wrong.

The survey could canvass the ethos of the school and those issues that matter to parents and students such as the level of respect, quality of relationships, culture of the school and whether the school gives students a fair go.

Minister for Home Affairs Brendan O'Connor said today that Australia's border management community had proven itself to be more integrated and better coordinated since the presentation of the National Security Statement in 2008.

"The integration of agencies across government into one border protect community, as envisioned in the National Security Statement, is key to continued improvements in border security," he said.

Mr O'Connor was speaking at the Pacific 2010 International Maritime Exposition in Sydney.
