Liverpool Jobs Expo

What would it take to attract 9000 people to the Whitlam Leisure Centre in Western Sydney on a Friday? A Pearl Jam concert? A 20/20 cricket match? An appearance by the great man himself?

Last December I found the answer - the chance to get a job.

As part of the Rudd Government’s Economic Stimulus Plan we held a Jobs Expo in Western Sydney. In one day 9000 people turned up - keen to find a job. The Whitlam Leisure Centre was transformed into a jobs supermarket, a one-stop-shop for jobs.

Big companies like Woolworths and Bunning’s - even the Defence Force - were there with jobs to fill. And fill them they did. More than 500 people got a job or apprenticeship on the day.

This is a good example of what the Rudd Government is doing to keep Australia working.  We’ve held five Jobs Expos held so far, from Townsville to Tassie, and they have created more than 1,700 jobs and apprenticeships.

We’re running the next Jobs Expo at Bankstown Town Hall with more than 80 local employers offering more than 1000 jobs. In the next few months there will be 16 more Jobs Expos around the country in places that have been hit hardest by the global recession. Places like the northern suburbs of Adelaide, South-West Perth and the Central Coast of NSW.

TV tradie Scott Cam and NRL great Hazem El Masri are using their star power to get people in the door. But the real stars are the employers who are there with the jobs that will get people back to work.

If you’re an employer or know of a business who might be interested – contact my team on (02) 9790 2466 to find out how you can get involved.

Well that job convention

Well that job convention sounded great, a pity this kind of convention does not happen down here in Wollongong who by the way has one of the highest unemployment. My husband has been unemployed for 2 yrs and like King Alfred, he has submitted his resume to that many jobs, and he is lucky to get one letter out of 10 application. My husband has been in the IT industry for 20/25yrs, he is far more experienced than any of the young technical people around (sorry to say) but as he does not hold some form of IT certification he is finding that big Companies are extremely interested but they need that certification .........i think for litigation reasons gives them a cover. As a mature worker he has applied for the CCNA certification and as it is a certification and not a diploma or one of the many other recognised papers, he is unable to get funding through the VET or HEX program. I am amazed that the government has not moved to make all forms of further study fall under one of the above. I am not for hand outs but a hand up i.e. it gets paid back when you start work.

Australian jobs are precious for AUSTRALIANS. How do we sustain our internal economy if more and more of the average Australian (majority population) people keep losing jobs? Who is going to buy/shop? Never mind how do they cover the rising cost of life's necessities?. It never fails to amaze me that some one in the government hasn't given though to..........what comes around ....goes around.

Kiteflyer you are right.......my husband being an IT person has said the same as you.....you cannot stop these obnoxious sites, total waste of money.

I'm 52. I'm on a Disability

I'm 52. I'm on a Disability Support Pension, and although the increase in the singles pension by the government was very welcome, it is still a struggle for me to keep my head above water financially. Employers are reluctant to take on people with health problems because of insurance issues, so my only option is to work as a contractor or to be self employed. I have spent most of my working life working on embedded software and computer hardware design. I do not have the expertise or support to go into business myself, which is what I'd like to do. Most people tell me that setting up your own business requires a great deal of hard work, good health and a fair bit of initial capital. I believe something like 80% of new businesses fail in the first 2 years, which is not a very encouraging statistic. It is also very difficult to get professional indemnity and public liability insurance required to to run your own business. I'm not averse to hard work, but health issues are a problem and capital is an issue too. I feel I have a great deal to contribute to the community in terms of my expertise, but my abilities are very much under utilized.

I very pleased with our Prime

I very pleased with our Prime Ministers performance and believe he is doing a great job as are the other front benchers in particular Mr. Lindsay Tanner.

I agree with the PMs comments that older workers should stay in the workforce longer & to assist in this he should go a step further and encourage the Public Service to embark upon an affirmative action plant to recruit older workers, they claim not to have any bias against older applicants but my experience over the previous 12 months does not bear this out, I have applied for numerous vacancies in every state of our great country and at varying levels from junior roles or team leaders and also management positions ,all of which I am more than capable of doing, to no avail, when I include in my CV showing the management positions I previously held then its not hard work out an age range. Therfore it is my contention that I am being discriminated against due to my age and this needs to be addressed & rectified.

Thank You

Alistair

The Government's proposed

The Government's proposed mandatory Internet filter will create many more administrative jobs within the Government, which the Australian people will have to pay for. The mandatory filter will hurt Australian businesses, drive up the cost of Internet services and it just won't work. It won't protect our kids and it won't stop criminals engaged in the abuse of children. I suggest we spend all those millions of dollars pegged for the filter on funding Australian police to investigate and apprehend criminals. Shame on you, Senator Conroy; your incompetence has wasted 17 million dollars of Australian taxpayers' money on a flawed tender process for our National Broadband Network, and now you intend to forge ahead with an unwanted, unnecessary, unworkable mandatory Internet filter that will not protect our children in any way, and will cost all Australians millions of dollars more in set-up and administrative costs in perpetuity. Shame shame shame!

Did you just say that Steven

Did you just say that Steven Conroy's filter will create jobs? It must be a good policy then...

I think that Kevin Rudd

I think that Kevin Rudd worked for the Australian people. But slowly, and that's good. Because the interests of the country need to be a deep sense in making decisions for the benefit of the people. Through the provision of work with the country's needs in the development of economic and scientific capacity.
I think that providing opportunities for each person through State enterprises. With a program of recruitment. Is the most important work in the government's policy to make the people happy through the opportunities for each person an Australian resident or a permanent basis.

Thank you to everyone working in the Labor Party. Because they are working to serve the Australian people

I cannot point the finger at

I cannot point the finger at the Labor gov't for the problems we have with jobs as it has been happening for many many years before K Rudd was in the seat,
I believe Australia needs to correct it's way of thinking when it comes to employment, as far to many employees are allowed to shop from overseas when seeking workers, I personally have several qualifications and many skills but for some strange unknown reason I just cannot gain employment, I can't even get feedback to see where I am failing with applications, when in a job club I had all of my labour skills listed at the top of the resume, this was ignored, so the job office said to rearrange it and place the higher skills and qualifications at the top, still no replys on applications, 22 years after leaving the big smoke for the country life, I am still at a loss to know why I cannot get work.

A good initiative, but we

A good initiative, but we need to look at the jobs being transferred overseas and blue collar workers losing out and not being retrained.

i am not sure whether this

i am not sure whether this the correct place to leave this comment.
But it could effects jobs
It worries me the things that Joyce is saying, first and foremost because
people overseas that we trade and do business with, may take him seriously.
And they may be scared to invest australia because theya re worried he may be
treasurer, Heaven help us.
